Gel nails are supposed to last until the next manicure visit. But let’s be honest: we all know that, unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes they get a quirk or break off. And mainly in those moments when we can’t just drop by the nail salon. And now? It’s always better to have the paint professionally removed. But if there is no other way, you can remove the gel nails yourself – we will show you how it works as gently as possible. In this article, we read about How to remove gel nail polish? These are the steps at a glance:

How to remove gel nail polish

Remove gel nails yourself: the instructions.

  1. File off the top layer of nail polish
  2. Protect the cuticles with cream or oil
  3. Soak the nails in nail polish remover containing acetone
  4. Wrap the nails in cotton wool and aluminum foil and wait 10 minutes
  5. Remove the nail polish
  6. File the nails
  7. Apply nail care

It doesn’t sound that difficult. And here every step again exactly …

Step by step: How to remove your gel nail polish at home

In the following, we explain how the individual steps work. A tip in advance: Always pay attention to regular nail care and have a sound nail file on hand!

Step 1: remove the top layer.

First, the top layer of gloss must be removed. For this, you take a coarse-grained file and work your way carefully over the color until the sheen is gone. Be careful that no paint dust gets stuck under the cuticle. And make sure that you don’t remove all of the colors and accidentally file the nail off with it. It’s just about the top layer.

Step 2: protect cuticles to remove gel nail polish

Now you have to protect your skin from the paint remover, which is about to be used. Therefore rub the cuticles thickly with heavy cream or nail oil. This prevents the acetone in the paint remover from attacking the skin too much.

Step 3: soak gel nail polish

Yes, acetone is disreputable because it dries out skin and nails, but unfortunately, gel nails cannot do without it. It is best to use one with a few additional care properties as possible – precisely the one that you would never do to your nails with regular polish. Soak a cotton ball with it and place it on your fingernail so that the paint is completely covered. Don’t use cotton pads – they can’t hold as much nail polish remover as cotton balls. It is best to do this step in an open window or, even better outside to avoid inhaling the acetone fumes.

Step 4: wrap with foil to remove gel nail polish

Each fingernail must be covered with a cotton ball. Simply wrap a little aluminum foil around your finger with a cotton ball to keep everything in place. So everything stays where it should be. It may well be that the fingers feel warm – then the whole thing begins to work. If you are right-handed, you start with your left hand – that’s easier. The acetone cotton balls should sit for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 5: remove gel

Now take off the foil and pull the cotton ball over the nail with light pressure. Most of the nail polish should come off now. You can carefully scrape off paint residues with a cuticle stick.

Step 6: shape nails to remove gel nail polish

It’s been a while since the last nail care. So it’s time to get your nails back into shape. With a coarse nail file, you can shorten the nails as much as you like. The edges then smoothed with a more OK file so that the pin short, well-groomed, and smooth before the new varnish applied.

Step 7: maintain nails

After the acetone procedure, your nails now need one thing above all: a lot of CARE and moisture. Unfortunately, just applying lotion is not enough – it’s best to dip your fingertips in a nail oil bath for five to ten minutes. This helps them to recover from the exertion. Make sure to use moisturizers regularly afterward.
