If you feel a slight fever, immediately cancel your plan and stay home. Take rest and sleep on time. Getting enough sleep boosts your immune system and prepares it to face challenges.

Children feel difficulty in sleeping during fever. It would help to tell them favorite stories or watch poems to keep them engaged otherwise. They may tease you or weep due to uneasiness.

Wear Light Clothes

Try to stay in light clothes. Do not put on more than one shirt. These will only increase the temperature of your body. Also, try to sleep on a soft bedsheet and not overload yourself with blankets. Keep the room temperature cool or moderate, at least.

Stay Hydrated

Fever washes away body fluids. You start lacking essential components. It is important to take enough fluids when you have a fever, especially due to flu. Children may not like to drink extra water. So you can try alternatives for them, for instance, chicken broth, flavored jello and fruit juices, etc.

Take Bath

Taking a warm or tepid bath may assist in reducing fever. If it does not look appealing, you should put a wet cloth on your forehead to absorb body heat. This is considered one of the best home remedies to reduce fever.


Besides taking care of your body, it is advisable to cure fever with some medications. Here is a list of some famous medicines proven to break a fever.

  •       Ibuprofen (Motrin IB, Advil and others)
  •       Acetaminophen
  •       Acetaminophen (Tylenol and others)
  •       Aspirin

You should follow the instructions given on the labels while taking these medicines. Or else take the doses prescribed by the doctor. Do not overdose on any pill, as it can lead to kidney and liver damage. Do not give aspirin to infants and children. It can prove to be fatal.

When to See a Doctor

No doubt, by certain precautions, you can break a fever at home, but sometimes it is not reduced for a long period. If the temperature exceeds 103 F and other factors like nausea, sensitivity, vomiting, chest or abdominal pain continue, you should not delay further and see a doctor.
